Our Group’s Letters of Concern Helped Release Wa’el Ali Farraj of Palestine.
Wa’el Ali Farraj was a 24-year-old history student, detained without charge or trial for nearly three years, despite a High Court judgment ordering his release.
He was arrested on April 24, 1996 at his home in Gaza City by members of the Palestinian Authority’s General Intelligence, who told his wife that he would return shortly after questioning.
During the first few days of his detention Wa’el Farraj was severely beaten and deprived of sleep and food. He was hooded throughout this period, including during mealtimes.
He was then transferred to a General Intelligence detention centre and interrogated for another month.
He was held at the General Intelligence’s detention centre in Gaza City.
In February 1999 the Palestinian High Court found that the detention of Wa’el Farraj was unlawful and ordered his immediate release, but Wa’el Farraj is still being detained. He was release in November of 2000
The Global Importune letter signing group began sending letters of concern on behalf of Wa’el Farraj to officials in the government of Israel sometime around February 1999.
He was RELEASED on November 3, 2000.
