Our Group’s Letters of Concern Helped Release Riad Al-Turk of Syria

Riad al-Turk is an independent member of the Syrian National Assembly (Parliament).

He was arrested on September 1, 2001, charged with “defying the state and trying to change the constitution by illegal means” and subjected to a trial widely seen as unfair before a state security court.

In June 2002 he was sentenced to three years imprisonment for `attempting to change the constitution by illegal means.`

Riad al-Turk was released after serving fifteen months of his sentence, and resumed his political activities.

The Global Importune letter signing group began sending letters of concern on behalf of Riad al-Turk to officials in the Syrian government sometime around November 2001.

He was RELEASED on November 11, 2003.
