Our Group’s Letters Of Concern Helped Release: Hafnaoui Ghoul of Algeria
Hafnaoui Ghoul, imprisoned Journalist, human rights activist, (September 2004) Hafnaoui Ghoul, a correspondent for the daily newspaper “El Youm” and a member of the Algerian Human Rights League. Hafnaoui Ghoul publicized concerns about human rights violations and alleged corruption and public mismanagement in the region of Djelf.
Within weeks, local officials brought a series of defamation suits against him. In one case, a court sentenced him to two months’ imprisonment and ordered him to pay a heavy fine after he implicated a local official in health scandals and called for an investigation.
Hafnaoui Ghoul could faced additional prison sentences in more than a dozen cases that remain to be decided. He was jailed again on in May of 2004 after exposing corruption and abuses by local officials.
The Global Importune letter signing group began sending letters of concern on behalf of Hafnaoui Ghoul to officials in the government Algerian sometime around September 2004.
He was RELEASED on November 25, 2004
