Our Group’s Letters of Concern Helped Release: Dr. Mohiuddin Alamgir of Bangladesh

Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir
Dr. Mohiuddin Alamgir a senior member of Bangladesh’s main opposition party, the Awami League, was reported to be in poor health following severe torture in police and army custody, and is reportedly being denied medical attention. Although he was charged with undertaking activities against the government, Amnesty International believes that he is being detained because of their peaceful political activities.
Dr. Alamgir has testified that police severely beat him with lathi (bamboo sticks) and glass bottles filled with water. Furthermore, he was denied medicine for his diabetes. Authorities have failed to investigate his allegations.
The Global Importune letter signing group began sending letters of concern on behalf of Dr. Mohiuddin Alamgir to officials in the Bangladesh government sometime around July 2002.
He was RELEASED on November 19, 2002
