FROM JAIL TO FREEDOM ONE LETTER AT A TIME
Global Importune (G.I.) is a non-profit human rights group, was originally founded by Mark Konrad in Montgomery County, just outside of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States of America and now based in the Canadian city of London, Ontario, G.I. has spent over a decade preserving, promoting and protecting the human rights of all people through its letters of concern project.
As of December 1, 2011, G.I. has more than 579 actively participating members of its letter signing group [see below] and has been responsible in part for the release of at least 417 Amnesty International (A.I.) political prisoners, that we know of.
Each month, G.I. focuses on at least three different A.I. cases involving victims of human rights abuse from varied countries. Most are what A.I. calls prisoners of conscience; people imprisoned solely for their beliefs, color, sex, ethnic origins, language, or religion, who have not used or advocated violence. Others may have been denied a fair and prompt trial, while others may have been tortured or “disappeared.” Each one needs our help.
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world”
– Anne Frank
If you decide to become a member of G.I. you should look forward to receiving the letters in the early part of each month. You have the option of:
- Signing or not signing the enclosed letters;
- Copying the letters directly onto your own stationery [personal or professional] and signing;
- Handwriting letters directly onto your stationery or
- Composing your own letters based on the provided information.
Whichever method you choose be sure to return the letters to G.I. as quickly as possible.
There is never a fee to participate in the monthly letter-signing actions.
Please keep in mind that personal letters of concern from caring G.I. participants have brought about a prisoner’s release, secure vital information, launched investigations and even save lives.
Your letters can and will have a tremendous affect in the fate of these individuals.
Amnesty International is a worldwide movement working impartially for the release of prisoners of conscience, fair and prompt trials for all political prisoners’ and an end to torture, “disappearances,” and executions. Global Importune works to achieve the same overall goals as Amnesty International.
